Greenfield Notes

Field notes on growing food in small spaces.

Balcony tomatoes, second attempt

Last year the plants grew tall and gave almost nothing. This season I switched to a compact variety, moved the pots closer to the railing for more light and cut watering in half once the first fruit set. The harvest was small but steady until the first cold nights.

Why I stopped buying seedlings

Store seedlings look healthy, but half of mine sulked for weeks after transplanting. Starting from seed takes longer and needs a windowsill, yet the plants adapt better and cost a fraction of the price.

Tools that earned their place

A narrow trowel, a pair of sharp snips, a watering can with a long spout and a notebook. Everything else I bought in the first year is now in a box under the bed.

About

I keep these notes to remember what worked and what did not. No ads, no newsletter, just a small record of a small garden.
